"Christmas Champions was originally written for BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction. Now a live multimedia show has been commissioned by The Sage Gateshead and will be touring in December 2008. BBC Folk Award winning duo Chris Wood and Hugh Lupton are joined by The English Acoustic Collective and Olivia Ross in a performance that mixes the recorded voices of past generations with ritual theatre, seasonal song, storytelling and music in a celebration of England’s most enduring midwinter custom: The Mummers Play.
The show combines the music of midwinter, both choral and instrumental, with new songs and re-workings of established carols, worked into field recordings of Herbie Smith's reminiscences of mumming in the Medway valley at the turn of the last century. Hugh Lupton's narrative constantly contextualises the music and the singers reciprocate, weaving and compounding imagery, parable and drama. It is the true, native, vernacular mystery play and this performance, directed by Tim Dalling, brings it vividly to life.

Skyhook are an exciting collaboration of three of the finest acoustic musicians in Sheffield, England. Martin Harwood, Cath James and Eoin Teather play traditional tunes and songs from Scotland, Ireland, Cape Breton Island, plus some brand new self-penned compositions. skyhook are characterised by breathtaking twin fiddles combined with sublime guitar, bouzouki and voice. They shift seamlessly between driving dance music and spine-tingling songs, and play with a joy and precision that's hard to match.
Skyhook are touring from February to April see www.skyhookmusic.com for details | Africa to Appalachia Malian kora master MANSA SISSOKO and Canadian banjo player JAYME STONE used music as their common language when they first met when Jayme journeyed to Mali to search for the banjo's surviving ancestors. They instantly forged an unusual and challenging friendship which opened both their eyes. Musically they blur the lines of time and location to create a riveting performance which breaks down boundaries but creates a constant level of infectious achievement aided and abetted by Paul Mathew and Nick Fraser.
Africa to Appalachia is touring the UK during January - see www.jaymestone.com for dates....
